The Snow/Ice Storm of 2012

We had quite an eventful couple of weeks in January. First came the snow. We don't get much snow here in Western Washington but it sure dumped for a few days. The boys had a blast, and obviously Dean loved eating it. What kid doesn't?

Dawson liked watching, but wasn't really into it. It was a pretty steep hill. Dean loved it and we had a hard time getting him off the hill.

After the snow came the ice. We have freezing rain a lot, but we've never had ice like this. Overnight ice covered everything and it was so thick that tree branches started snapping and breaking power lines. By 7 am the power was out and that lasted 2 days. Here are some shots of our poor plum tree in the back yard.

As we sat by our gas fireplace to stay warm, we heard a big crack and saw the tree split in half.

My sister Shelby's family didn't even have a gas fireplace so their house got cold pretty fast. They spent the day with us so we weren't too bored in the dark. The boys were sad without tv, but thank goodness for the DS!

This is our tree out front. After the plum tree broke, Jonathan went out and hit a lot of the ice off our other trees so thankfully none of our other trees were lost.

It was amazing to drive around and see all the snapped trees. This is a tree in our neighborhood that had to be completely sawed down. We saw this same thing all over Puyallup. It was sad to see, but at least no one was hurt.

Before our power came back on, the mall's power came on so we went down there to eat lunch and kill some time. The kids really needed to get out their pent-up energy at the play place.
